Guimarães is a beautiful city, known as the “cradle of Portugal” because the first Portuguese king was born here. This medieval city is famous for its historic center, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001.
We start the tour in Guimarães at Largo Martins Sarmento; from here, we will explore this detail-rich historic area on foot.
Palace of the Dukes of Bragança
The Palace of the Dukes is a 15th-century building, commissioned by the first Duke of Bragança. It is a palace with historical significance and characteristic architecture of the period. The staircase leading to the upper floor is entirely made of stone. I really enjoyed the experience.
In the wings, there are works of art, furniture, and tapestries that depict the rich history of the region and the Bragança family. We can take photos, but filming is not allowed.
There is also a Gothic-style chapel with a main altar and stained glass windows that allow natural light to enter. In the background, Gregorian chant can be heard. It felt like I was traveling back in time… The chapel is still used for religious ceremonies and special events to this day.
The monument to Dom Afonso Henriques is an impressive statue erected in honor of the first king of Portugal, located in Largo de São Mamede, near the Castle of Guimarães. The statue depicts Dom Afonso Henriques with a sword, symbolizing his leadership and crucial role in the foundation of Portugal.
The work was inaugurated in 1887 and serves as a significant landmark for both visitors and locals, celebrating the historical importance of Guimarães as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation.
Guimarães Castle
After visiting Mount Latito and its pleasant garden, we went to Guimarães Castle. To enter and explore, we needed to present the ticket purchased at the ticket office in the Palace of the Dukes.
The castle began to be built in the 10th century to defend the population from Viking and Moorish attacks. Still preserving its imposing walls and stone towers, the castle offers a glimpse into medieval military architecture. The view from the Keep Tower is stunning!
The Castle of Guimarães is not only a symbol of Portugal’s history and independence but also an important tourist destination, attracting both domestic and international visitors eager to explore the country’s roots.
