Riverside Trail of Loures

Whether walking or cycling, it doesn’t matter—the landscape is beautiful

The Riverside Trail of Loures is a little-known gem in the Lisbon metropolitan area, perfect for those who want to be in touch with nature without straying far from the city. This trail offers a perfect combination of stunning landscapes, tranquility, and proximity to the region’s biodiversity.

Along the banks of the Trancão River, the Riverside Trail of Loures spans about 10 km of mostly flat trails, with a few moderately steep sections. It’s excellent for a walk or a bike ride. The scenery along the route is spectacular, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching.

Most of the trail is flat, making it easily accessible to everyone, including families with strollers or cyclists of all ages. If you like, you can bring your dog, as long as it’s on a leash. There are benches, shaded rest areas, and viewpoints along the way.

We rented bicycles and only covered 12 km of the trail. We started from the area beneath the Vasco da Gama Bridge, though there are other entry points.

The trail is easily accessible from various areas within the Loures municipality and Greater Lisbon. There are parking areas near the start of the route, as well as public transport stations, making it convenient for visitors. The trail is also equipped with clear signage and informative panels about the local fauna, flora, and the area’s history.

Tips to Make the Most of It

Bring Water and Snacks: Although the trail is relatively short, there aren’t many shops along the way, so it’s always good to be prepared. If you’re bringing your dog, don’t forget waste bags.

Sunscreen and Hat: Most of the trail is exposed, so protecting yourself from the sun is essential, especially during the summer.

Camera or Binoculars: If you’re a fan of photography or birdwatching, be sure to bring your gear.

Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the heat and enjoy softer light for photos.

If you want to do the trail with an electric bike or scooter, there’s a Lime rental point near Parque das Nações, just below the Vasco da Gama Bridge. To rent, simply download the app, sign up, choose a payment method, and unlock the vehicle.
